During the Tumblr movement, users started mixing grunge, gothic and sporty styles, which were most popular during the time, especially amongst teenagers. For example, recent years have seen a rise in popularity for the 90s and Y2K aesthetic fashion. While aesthetic fashion emerged during the Tumblr movement in the early 2010s, different subcategories of aesthetic fashion have been more popular than others through the years.
While the younger generations are more likely to embrace this style of clothing, aesthetic clothes can be worn by anyone as it essentially involves a good looking outfit and allows one to express themselves, in a way, they find pleasing.
The categories are also based on fads of specific decades such as the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Thus, there are various subcategories under aesthetic fashion as a whole including indie, grunge, soft-girl, vintage and more. Different people find different things aesthetic depending on their personal tastes. Unsurprisingly, aesthetic fashion is ever-changing and a much broader concept. I rounded up outfits for each aesthetic, so whether you want to experiment with each or find your summer match, you can keep on scrolling.Aesthetic fashion is all about the art of style including all that is pleasant to look at. From the Regency-era princesscore look (thanks, Bridgerton) to the outfits that let you channel your inner grandma by the shore, the options this summer are endless. I made my share of predictions for the aesthetics that would rule in 2022, and to my excitement, almost every one has come true. Narrowing the looks down to individual pieces can be overwhelming for some, so seeing them stylized for particular lifestyles can make them more accessible, especially for people who have trouble putting outfits together. It seems like a new term to describe one's style pops up on the internet every month, and while the looks behind each aesthetic aren't revolutionary, coining a term can help others navigate each and pinpoint what works best for their own personal style.
The topic of fashion aesthetics is my favourite to cover here at Who What Wear, as it lets me dive into little style worlds that I may not take a look at regularly.
